Biewer has a long history of commitment to sustainable forestry practices. We employ several foresters at each mill, all of whom manage procurement of timber and administer the Private Landowner Assistance Program on location at our sawmills in both Michigan and Wisconsin.

Of the several sustainable forestry certification programs, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) administered by the American Forest and Paper Association is one of the largest and most recognizable.

SFI is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives, and performance measures that helps to ensure our forests are managed, used and protected wisely for current and future generations. SFI also adopts the premise that business and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. While compliance with the SFI is voluntary, Biewer Lumber sees this program as an invaluable tool for responsible harvesting.

The scope of the SFI includes, but is not limited to:

• Broadening the practice of sustainable forestry
• Ensuring prompt reforestation
• Protecting water quality
• Enhancing wildlife habitat
• Minimizing the visual impact of harvesting
• Protecting special sites
• Contributing to biodiversity
• Continuing improvements in wood utilization
• Continuing the prudent use of forest chemicals to ensure forest health
• Encouraging good, sound forest management principles

Most loggers and foresters who work with Biewer Lumber are required to have an additional eight hours of continuing education every year.

As part of Biewer Lumber’s participation in the SFI, we require loggers
to complete a core education program that includes training in:

• Forest silviculture practices
